For more than 50 years, the University of South Carolina College of Social Work has influenced the well-being of individuals, families and communities in South Carolina and beyond. Our graduates improve lives in countless ways and through varied careers from advocates and administrators to educators and policymakers.

The College of Social Work is a leading, research-based learning setting that’s a Top 20% Social Work program nationally, according to US News & World Report. Here, students take an active role in understanding and shaping the ways social work improves communities. Whether working toward an advanced generalist career or focused certificate specialization, our social work practitioners and scholars are committed to positive social change.

Leadership in Education

The Baccalaureate of Social Work and Master of Social Work programs are both accredited by the Council on Social Work Education, which has awarded unconditional accreditation to the college’s programs after every review. Our curriculum and practice experiences provide the knowledge, skills and preparation to lead change that enhances the well-being of others.

Built for Change

The College of Social Work offers degree options from undergraduate to the state’s largest MSW program with locations in Charleston, Columbia and Greenville. We’re also home to the only doctoral program in the state. Our students can pursue specialized graduate certificates, combination degrees or continuing education coursework required for licensure – all from the College of Social Work.

Our students don’t just learn about social change; they’re part of it. We partner with more than 500 agencies across South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia where students learn and work in field education experiences alongside expert faculty and community leaders.

Making a Difference in SC

The College of Social Work’s research expertise impacts business and government entities every day. Our students and faculty are serving the wellness of physicians, nurses, social workers and pharmacists in South Carolina to better prevent career burnout. Our field education program is one of the nation’s strongest, providing 350,000 student volunteer hours statewide annually — an infusion of service valued at more than $1 million to the South Carolina economy.

Answers and Solutions

Research is integral to the College of Social Work and contributes to the University of South Carolina being designated as an institution of very high research activity by the Carnegie Foundation. Faculty and students from the college and five centers and institutes work in cooperation with local, state and national agencies on evidence-based research, collecting data to help answer and address issues in social conditions and family and community development.

Empowering Positive Change

College of Social Work faculty, staff and students impact social justice both locally and nationally. The school’s I. DeQuincey Newman Institute of Peace and Social Justice is a national resource for transdisciplinary teaching and advocacy on social justice issues. The school sponsors events exploring race relations and diversity; the state’s housing crisis, food insecurity, income inequities and lack of rural healthcare; voting inequality; and other issues that diminish people and communities.
